Meet Brody: Our Therapy Dog

Brody the Good Boy Thompson is our certified therapy dog and an important part of the supportive, welcoming environment we strive to create in counseling. Brody is a 90-pound Golden Retriever known for his calm presence, gentle temperament, and friendly personality. He will be turning three years old at the end of January, and he has already become a trusted companion for many clients who benefit from Animal-Assisted Interventions in therapy.

Brody works under the supervision of Brandy Thompson, Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern, and is incorporated into sessions in a professional, ethical, and clinically appropriate way based on each client’s comfort and preference.

Brody’s Training & Certifications

Brody is certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, one of the most recognized therapy dog organizations. He has also completed extensive obedience and behavior training through Star Quality Dog Training in Ormond Beach, Florida, including both basic and advanced work.

Brody has earned additional certifications through the American Kennel Club (AKC), including:

  • AKC STAR Puppy

  • AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

These certifications demonstrate strong obedience skills, reliable behavior, and a calm temperament in public and professional settings—qualities that are essential for therapy work.

How Brody Supports the Therapy Process

Brody’s presence during counseling sessions can be deeply beneficial for clients who experience:

  • Stress and overwhelm

  • Anxiety symptoms

  • Depressive symptoms

  • Difficulty with emotional regulation

  • Discomfort opening up in therapy

Many clients find that Brody helps create a sense of calm and safety, which can make it easier to engage in therapy and process challenging emotions. His comforting presence can be grounding during difficult conversations and may contribute to improved emotional balance during and after session.

Therapeutic Benefits of Animal-Assisted Interventions

When appropriate, Brody can support therapeutic goals by helping clients:

  • Increase comfort and emotional safety during sessions

  • Improve mood and reduce tension

  • Practice grounding and self-soothing skills

  • Strengthen communication, trust, and relational boundaries

  • Build confidence in emotional expression and connection

Brody provides a unique opportunity for clients to experience nonjudgmental companionship while engaging in meaningful therapeutic growth.

Safety & Client Choice

Brody carries his own liability insurance, and his involvement in therapy is always guided by professional standards. Participation is completely optional, and Brody is only included when clients request him or when it is clinically appropriate and agreed upon.

Clients who are interested in incorporating Brody into their sessions are welcome to let their clinician know, and we will do our best to accommodate.
